There are very few celebrities whose handbag collections feel like a time capsule of fashion history quite like Lindsay Lohan’s.
As Lindsay celebrates her 40th birthday, looking back through two decades of photographs feels like revisiting the evolution of luxury handbags themselves. From the first wave of “it bags” that dominated the early 2000s to the more refined pieces she’s gravitated toward in recent years, her style has evolved not only alongside the fashion world but also alongside many of us who grew up watching her.
Long before social media dictated trends, celebrity street style was everything. Paparazzi photos from coffee runs, airport arrivals, and nights out influenced what shoppers wanted to carry, and Lindsay was at the center of that conversation. She was the it girl of the it-bag era, which was precisely when we started PurseBlog. I have specific memories of her carrying bags seared into my brain, as I was an avid fan of her and her style. She embraced many of the era’s most memorable bags, often carrying the pieces that would go on to define an entire generation of handbag lovers.
Let’s take a walk through the bags that marked each chapter of her style journey!
The Early 2000s: When Celebrity Style Ruled Fashion#
It’s difficult to explain today’s fashion landscape without remembering what celebrity style looked like twenty years ago.
Instagram didn’t exist. TikTok wasn’t even imaginable. If you wanted to know what was fashionable, you waited for paparazzi photos to hit entertainment websites (JustJared was my go-to) or flipped through weekly magazines from the grocery store checkout line. Celebrities weren’t simply wearing trends; they were creating them. A bag landing on the right person could change a designer’s trajectory, just ask Rebecca Minkoff.
Lindsay Lohan quickly became one of Hollywood’s defining young stars, and with every appearance came another memorable handbag. Her style could be defined as Y2K maximalism: the uniform was oversized designer bags, low-rise jeans, tank tops or fitted tees, leather jackets, scarves, ballet flats or tall boots, and big sunglasses became her signature look.
Looking back now, many of those bags have become modern collectibles, while others are enjoying a second life thanks to fashion’s ongoing fascination with Y2K style.

From Statement Bags to Quiet Luxury#
As fashion evolved, so did Lindsay’s personal style. After a bit of time away from the spotlight, Lindsay returned with a baby and a new aura about her.
Her style moved towards cleaner, more elevated looks, with structured silhouettes and understated luxury. It’s what we’ve seen across the fashion world, and the nice thing is that, even as Lindsay embraces this, she still brings her personal touch to every outfit. She wears color and patterns, but they are sleeker and more refined, rather than the early grungy black denim-oversized-shirt combo.
Lindsay has always been a bag girl; in fact, in my mind, she is one of the first that I give much credit to for the start of the handbag heyday.
Looking through her handbags over time is one of the greatest reminders that Lindsay Lohan shouldn’t be counted out as one of the most influential bag lovers of our time.
