Are you a Chanel enthusiast? How much do you really know about second-hand Chanel handbags from the 1980s and 1990s? In recent years, vintage bags have surged in popularity, largely because many classic styles are no longer in production. With limited supply and rising prices, finding a high-quality vintage Chanel bag is no easy task. If you are spending tens of thousands on a pre-owned piece, doing your research matters. To learn which styles hold value best and how to assess authenticity, ELLE spoke with renowned brand authenticator Zijian, who shared his insights on the vintage Chanel market.
1. From what year can a second-hand Chanel handbag be called “second-hand”?#

Everyone talks about vintage bags, but what actually counts as “vintage”? Zijian, who has spent years studying vintage handbags, explained that there is a clear year-based distinction for Chanel. “We generally refer to Chanel handbags produced between 1986 and 2005 as vintage pieces. Since 1986, every Chanel bag has carried a serial number that records its year of production.” When a bag lacks a serial number, buyers often struggle to verify authenticity on their own and must rely on a professional appraiser.

Zijian added: “Chanel handbags made before the 1980s differ noticeably from today’s designs in both appearance and craftsmanship. Many bags from the 1960s and 1970s appear online, and authentication is genuinely difficult because there is no comprehensive reference guide. Even with today’s technology, it remains hard to find complete documentation of every detail on vintage Chanel bags.”
2. Identification experience is more important than certification#

Zijian believes most customers cannot authenticate vintage bags on their own, because it requires extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with pre-owned pieces. Some market certifications can be earned in as little as half a day or a week of training, which often amounts to little more than a credential on paper. In his view, real-world experience always outweighs a certificate when it comes to authentication.
3. Set a purchasing criterion for yourself#

“When buying a vintage Chanel bag, I think it is essential for customers to define their own standards. You should only buy a bag that falls within your knowledge and that you consider flawless.” He continued, “Some people, for example, insist on a serial number or authenticity card before purchasing. That is perfectly fine. In reality, serial numbers on decades-old bags can fade and cards can go missing. Does that make the bag fake? Not necessarily. But if those conditions give you peace of mind, then buy a bag that meets them.”

Zijian also advises buyers to compare styles on reputable, even international, second-hand platforms before committing, so they can avoid impulse purchases.

As an experienced authenticator, Zijian does not declare a bag fake based on a single irregular detail. “Many people believe Chanel never uses Phillips-head screws behind the buckle and only uses flat-head screws. But if an owner loses a screw and replaces it with a Phillips-head screw that fits, does that make the bag counterfeit?”

“Absolutely not. So remember, do not read one online article on authentication and apply every rule to every vintage bag. That approach is wrong.” If you remain uncertain and lack experience with vintage pieces, it is best to shop at a reputable store.
4. The most inquired Chanel second-hand handbags#

At Lovintage, Zijian’s second-hand luxury boutique, the Chanel Diana Bag, Classic Flap, and Camera bag draw the most inquiries. The Diana bag, famously carried by Princess Diana, is timeless and elegant. The vintage Camera bag features a carved hook and embodies classic Chanel hallmarks, making it a sought-after find.

Compared with the Camera bag, the Classic Flap currently offers stronger value retention, especially black Classic Flaps under 25 cm.
Chanel has continuously produced the Classic Flap. A new one from a boutique typically costs around NT$60,000 to NT$70,000. Since Chanel’s price increases, pre-owned Classic Flaps have sold even better. “Because vintage and current Classic Flaps share the same design, a 1991 Classic Flap in our store is priced at over NT$30,000 — roughly half the cost of a new one — which makes it an attractive option for customers.”
5. Expensive handbags must be maintained#

On the subject of maintenance, Zijian noted with a smile that Hong Kong buyers can be quite affluent. When bags get scratched or worn, many owners pay little attention. They also store bags carelessly, sometimes not even noticing mold. “If you ignore scratches, the damage tends to worsen over time. Everyone should remember the principle of treating problems early. Many people hesitate to take bags to repair shops — first because they worry about the craftsman’s handling, and second because they fear dishonest practices, such as parts being swapped.” With a preservation mindset, Zijian launched an in-store maintenance service. “I want customers to be able to repair bags at a reasonable cost. Over the past decade, quality vintage bags have become harder to find. Around ten years ago, it was already much more difficult to source a good pre-owned piece. People simply do not cherish these bags the way they should, so I keep working to educate the public about timely care.”
6. The importance of drying bags#

Many women have dealt with moldy handbags. Humidity is the primary culprit, followed by poor storage. Bags kept in wardrobes, boxes, or even under the bed — dark, poorly ventilated spaces — are especially prone to mold over time.
“If you have a shelf or glass cabinet at home and display your bags individually, that is the ideal storage environment. If you keep them in a cabinet, I recommend taking them out every month, airing them, exposing them to light, and wiping them clean. This simple routine goes a long way toward preventing mold.”
Zijian shared these storage tips with us.
