Vintage buyers once prioritized resale value, authenticity cards, and top condition grades—Rank SA or A, nearly new. Recently, the market has shifted: Rank AB and B pieces with visible use are gaining traction.
A report this year from U.S. resale platform The Real Real shows high-grade (Rank SA or A) handbag transactions down an average of 33%, while more shoppers opt for lower-priced Rank AB and B luxury goods.
Rating of used item condition#

The pre-owned market uses condition grades so buyers know what to expect. Common tiers include:
SA: Near new, in excellent condition. A: Only minor signs of use, in good condition. AB: Minor signs of use or wear, standard condition. B: General signs of use or wear and tear, with obvious stains. BC: Obvious damage and stains, can be used normally. C: Severely damaged and stained, but does not affect use.
Second-hand bags are not the same as second-hand bags#

For newcomers, buying the highest grade feels safest—but that instinct often reflects a misunderstanding of what “vintage” means.
Not every pre-owned bag qualifies as vintage. True vintage pieces are typically at least 20 years old. Brand, designer era, construction details, and whether a style is discontinued all weigh heavily on value.
Traces add a retro feel#

Buyers used to chase flawless bags; since last year, patina has become part of the appeal. The New York Times reported collectors deliberately seeking worn Hermès bags for a relaxed, lived-in look. The Real Real noted sharp sales growth for handbags with corner wear and average overall condition.
Many buyers say Rank AB or B bags still work perfectly for daily use while adding retro character—and proving how durable vintage leather can be.
Rarity of style is more important#

Condition is only one factor. Out-of-print or limited styles can command strong prices even when wear is obvious.
CHANEL Kelly Bag is appreciating in value#

The CHANEL Vintage Kelly Bag worn by Korea’s “Human Chanel” Jennie keeps climbing on the resale market. Its golden double C hardware and clean lines define the silhouette. Kelly bags appeared in many colors and materials; lambskin versions tend to lead on price. Discontinued long ago, pre-owned examples now exceed HK$60,000. CHANEL’s current FLAP BAG WITH TOP HANDLE reads as the modern successor to the vintage Kelly.
Other must-have second-hand bags#
Beyond the vintage Kelly, collectors should watch these categories:
- CHANEL Vintage Diana Bag
- CHANEL Exotic Animal Leather Handbag
- CHANEL Tortoise Shell Collection
- LOEWE Museum Collection
- LOEWE Snake Bone Series
Every vintage bag with a trace of time carries its own history. The ability to stay elegant after years of use is exactly what makes vintage worth collecting.
